The University of Vermont’s Center for Community News has added UNM to its national map of community news projects.

The Center for Community News is documenting programs around the country where universities are stepping up to address the crisis in local news.

At UNM, the Communication and Journalism Department launched the New Mexico News Port in 2014 to provide a collaboration and innovation lab where journalism students can directly participate in publishing to the people of New Mexico while helping the overall “local news ecosystem” advance new ways of working.

The Center for Community News is featuring C&J as a model “case study,” including a look at C&J’s highly successful Local News Fellowship program, where graduates from public universities in New Mexico are selected and matched with local newsrooms for 9-month paid fellowships. That program has placed 16 fellows in area newsrooms since 2019.
